A few weeks shy of his 90th birthday on November 10th, maestro Ennio Morricone announces his retirement from film scoring, after a legendary career which spans 60 years! “It does not bother me to stand at the podium for two hours, but I decided to stop film music, that’s too exhausting”, Morricone said in an interview with the Milan daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. Recently, he turned down two movies from Hollywood and one from an important Italian director.
Any exceptions? Just one: Giuseppe Tornatore, the Italian director. They first met in 1988 and since then they have formed and unforgettable pairing. But abandoning the cinema, doesn’t mean that Ennio Morricone will stop compose music. In fact he is just finishing a new piece. “I am in the process of completing a piece for two pianos and violin”, the composer reported.
Morricone wishes to live as long as possible with his wife Maria, with whom he has been married since 1951. “I’ve dedicated my two Academy Awards to Maria, it’s not easy to stand by my side, enduring a person who is, above all, self-demanding – challenging but not strict,” said the composer.
